Initial contact
BLASTING: LOG - TIMBER - CEDAR SHAKES - DECK - SIDING
The first step is contacting us via email with all important information required to understand what you are looking for. Name, address, type of wood home (hand made, milled, type of wood, pine, cedar, etc) as well as pictures of the 4 sides of the house. How is the access to the house, things in the way such as trees, deck, bolder, pool, etc. We need to know if the vehicles and equipment can get to your place safely. What is your main concern (re-stain, fixing logs, insect problems, etc)
A visual home inspection is required for most projects. The cost of inspection depends on travel time, gas and the report. We look at every aspect of your property from fixing the log shell (stain, UV, water damage, mold, mildew, rot, animal or insect damages and so on) We can also help with windows and doors, soffit, fascia, roof, deck and skirt. We can do as little or as much as you want to bring your old looking log home to what it was years ago.
INSPECTION REPORT
This report is emailed to you within 48 hrs and contain the summary of the inspection, what needs to be done right away and what can wait. We describe all the steps necessary to fix your home and provide you with a detailed quote of all the sub-sections of the project with pricing. We try to keep the in-site inspection as low as possible but travel time, gas, vehicle expenses are to be expected. Often see anywhere from $125 to $500.
PREP WORK
Our crew takes care of all the details and work necessary for the project. We make sure that all the outside items are put away or covered, Protect windows and doors, remove or protect downspout, eves, soffit, fascia, light & plus, A/C, deck, hottub or whatever is needed to proceed with blasting in a safe and clean way.
This is personally the best way to proceed with cleaning you log home. We use eng. crushed glass media in a middle of the road 50-70 grain that is strong enough to do the job without damaging the logs and environmentally friendly. We try to clean most of the sand debris left on the ground as much as possible and the rain will take care of the rest. We can bring back the old tired look of most log, timber, siding, decking, fencing, cedar shakes to its original beauty. Before removing it and changing it, always worth restoring it…
WOOD PRESERVATIVE
Boracol / mold / insecticide and fungicide prevention treatment would be recommended in most cases. This treatment helps with ants, bees, insects as well as help with wood decays.
FRESH LOOK
PERMA-CHINK
PRIMER
COLORS
Also known as Prelude from Perma-chink help to seal the logs after blasting and help with a more uniform stain application and look.
it is important to understand that not all stain are created equal. We often tell clients that you dont bring a Ferrari for a cheap oil change at Cdn Tire. The same apply for log home stain. We only proceed with high quality products such as Formula Ultra-7 from Perma-chink. This is a great product and requires less coats like other brands, saving time and money. You can see all the colors available from their website.
END SEAL
Extra protection for the log ends to seal it better from the UV and the elements.
CHINKING
This process is also important for water or insect infiltration as well as preventing heat lost. Help preventing condensation from forming between the logs in long term. Also give a nice finish look to your home. Can even stain on top of it if you dont want to see the chinking lines.
AFTER COAT STAIN
A clear top coat can be done as a follow-up preventive process about 4-7 years after the main job. This can be done by the home owner, or us, as it is simple and easy to do as it does not requires all the steps as above. A simple 6” brush is all you need or a sprayer. This is for UV protection and keep the initial color intact.
Log Work
WOOD DAMAGE
In many instance we can fix the damaged log sections by removing the bad rot that occurs usually on the outside and goes into the wood at about 3-4”. if the damage is less than 50% of the log we can, with a lot of work, fix it and make it look like it never happened. After removing the rot, a boracol treatment is applied and then the lamination of the new piece is secured in place. All fasteners are hidden and chinking hides them. Once all done, it is almost impossible to see where the old damaged log was. This is by far the most cost effective way of fixing this type of damage.
SERIOUS WOOD DAMAGE
Major wood damage that goes deep into the wood that can not be fixed and has to be changed.
Entire end piece had to be removed, cleaned, treated with boracol, spray foam, special glue.
New matching piece is in. Cut and trimmed to fit exactly to the shape and form of previous log. No visible fasteners once chinking is done.
Can be fixed by laminating matching log siding on top.
Process is seriously affordable compared to changing entire log.
End result is always worth it at a fraction of changing entire log.
Process is usually done in a day or so; compared to weeks.
No need for eng. reports or building permits / inspections.
This is the worst case scenario where the entire section of the log needed to be replaced. This is a long, consuming and expensive way of doing it. In some cases, we might not be able to do it and look at other alternatives. Special consideration with this process such as eng. structural report, building permit, locating the right replacement log and so on. This is somewhat very expensive and need to be taken into account for the budget.
FINAL REPORT.
Once the crew is all done with your project we go over what we did, we also talk about preventive measures that should be taken by the home owner to prevent further problems in the future. We are glad to go over other maintenance such as humid crawl space, damage eaves/downspout, bushes and plants too close to the house, snow on the deck touching the logs, short overhangs, insects, animals and so on.
Our team has been doing new log cabin build and restoration for over 20 years. Here some recent projects in last 2 years.
